at 8x10 inches.

Mott Street Morning

This was painted in the studio from sketches done on a recent trip to NY.
Chinatown in the morning, as the light just started to make its way down into the canyons
of the streets.

Saugerties N.Y. in October

This was painted years ago in the fall in NY, but recently repainted again from the old painting as reference.

Roxie Theater S.F.

Still kicking last I checked, but repainted to be all blue. This was painted 2 years or so ago, but i recently repainted over it again. I really like the spooky quality to the lighting.

Shore Birds at Point Lobos

A quick 2 hour study, painted about 5 months ago at Point Lobos.

Tangerines

I painted this last year but recently found a frame I like for it.

Jail Birds at Alcatraz

Painted this from photos and a sketch done on a recent night tour on Alcatraz with heavy fog and jail birds.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas from the yard, a great native plant to the area; requires little water.

I had this old frame I found at a flea market in NY 10 years ago.
Nice contrast of the flower's pink and the dark frame, but it feels a bit cramped.

Some quick one hour studies.
The weather has been really warm,
60 degrees, so pretty comfortable for painting outside
Here's one of El Capitan

Willy's Barber Shop in Oakland

I see this place occasionally on my bike ride to work.
I painted this 8 x 10 of it at dusk, it had a nice warm light interior contrasting with the
cooler colors of the evening.

Love the water, reflections and smokey fall colors.

Kaaterskill Falls in Early Winter

Kaaterskill Falls, Hunter New York
November 2012
20 x 16 , oil on linen panel

This was painted as a study last year in October when visiting New York, Then repainted in the studio recently this year, much looser this time..
Kaaterskill Falls is a favorite plein air subject.

Yosemite Rushing Water

24 x 20 inches, oil on linen panel

Inspiration View

Inspiration Point, Tilden Park, California
November 2009
8 x 16 inches, Oil on linen panel
This was painted from Inspiration Point in Tilden Park, perhaps 3 or more years ago.
I really liked the way the long, late afternoon shadows were contrasting against the water, Mt. Diablo is in the distance.

Morro Bay afternoon

San Luis Obisbo , California
April 2010
6 x 8 inches, oil on linen panel

Morro rock painted later in the day

Morro Bay early Morning

San Luis Obisbo , California
April 2010
6 x 8 inches, oil on linen panel
A quick study done a few years back. I liked the quality of the early morning light and the reflections in the water. Morro Rock? is probably the most dominant land feature in the area. I was here all day at the beach and painted it later in the day as well when it was more backlit.

Rockaway Beach Waves

Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, California
October 2012
20 x 24 inches, oil on linen panel

I painted this a few weekends ago at Rockaway Beach in Pacifica.
It was 80's on the coast and really clear. The wind was mild but the waves were enormous.
Surfer's paradise.
I've been really interested in capturing the waves in action, and this beach is a great location to do that, as its easy to get to and pretty uncrowded. It also has some really nice rock formations and great looking breaking surf.

Diablo Early Morning Shadows

Mount Diablo, California
October 2011
8 x 16 inches, oil on linen panel

I painted this while camping overnight with the kids' school in Mount Diablo State Park last year.
I woke up early in the morning to catch some really dramatic light on a clear day.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Afternoon Light

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
September, 2012
8 x 16 inches, oil on linen panel

Another view of this awesome park. I managed to paint this just before sunset at the park. The park were was unusually quiet and there was almost no one on the trail.
I kind of want to do larger paintings of each half of this study, each half deserving its own space and composition.

Point Lobos Surf

Point Lobos S.P., California
April 2010
8 x 16 inches, oil on linen panel

Another study of those beautiful Point Lobos rocks and surf in the sunlight. This was painted a few years back but recently has seen the light of day again in my studio.

Winter Surf

Big Sur, California
January 2012
8 x 16 inches, oil on linen panel

I found this older painting recently and reworked the waves and rock colors. I really like the motion of the water and the sense of light.

View From TreeBones

Big Sur, California
August 2012
6 x 8 inches, oil on linen panel

A quick study done while staying at The Treebones Resort
in Big Sur this August.
I found a great spot just on the edge of the bluffs near our yurt. The rock and pine tree set against the vast background mountains made this painting really interesting.
I want to develop this one further and give more space to the tree and rock to breathe, as well as show more of the water.

Point Lobos Rocks

Point Lobos S.P. Carmel, California
September 2011
8 x 16 inches, oil on linen panel

A study done on location pretty quickly in the afternoon.
This view of the sunlit rocks and kelp on the water surface was really interesting.
Bird Island seen in the center background.
